-- Journey to the Sea --

John Herlihy

We make way as rivers on a journey to the sea,

Flowing ever onwards with an identity that is me.

Sprung forth from emotive tears of a glacial spring,

Melting in a pristine field as overhead skylarks sing.

The thin trickle gathers momentum across the plain,

Later to turn a majestic deluge as the wavelets sang.

The indigo blue of the waters drip from God’s quill,

The river a clear mirror reflection found in God’s will.

Wrapped in firm embrace by the encompassing land,

The waters carve out the nearby cliff down into sand.

The life journey long and perilous and full of hazard,

As we move with the flow like an enterprising wizard.

Soon this river of mine will empty into an eternal sea;

A sea vast, enduring, with nothing left of the old me.

Nicely done. Using a river as an allegory for our lives. An idea that I'd like to try sometime.

Merging Nature, you, and the All-Powerful into a metaphor of water, river and ocean communicated an all-encompassing consideration of what many of us believe: we are all one. Well done, John.
