Aesop Visits Chestnut Ward

I saw a little gerbil
skitter through the door,
he’d crawled up the lift shaft
to the Hospital’s first floor,
found his way to Chestnut Ward
to look for the second Bay.
Sneaked past reception
and kept out of Sister’s way.
Aesop found me in the middle bed
and went hid around the back,
when no one was watching
he crawled up along the rack.
Hanging from the ‘monkey pull’
nose to nose with me,
he introduced himself at once,
"Hi, my name is Aesop" said he.
"I hopped aboard a Freighter
just to come and visit you,
I’m from Louisiana, in Southern USA
and crossing the Atlantic,
for me was something new.
We had a stormy passage
and I thought my end was near,
I was so very seasick
I really felt quite queer.
You look a little peeky
surrounded by all those drips,
tubes and needles everywhere
and machines emitting blips!
But you have no need to worry
now that Aesop’s here,
cos’ Pam and Ed and Jerry
have made it crystal clear
that I must keep my eye on you
and help you with the physio,
then when you’re back up on your feet
we all can dance a Jiggio!"
