The Waiting Game,

This is a game we play each and every day,
I guess it helps to pass the time away,
For busy people it makes them blow their top,
Oh how I wish we could bring it to a stop,

You pick up the phone all eager to make that important call,
It rings and rings there’s no answer there at all,
Suddenly there comes a mechanical voice sounding in your ear,
All our operators are busy, please wait until the line is clear,

Then comes that torture meant to drive one really mad,
Canned music which seems on purpose to be wholly bad,
Suddenly a voice announces, all our operators are busy on other calls,
Please hold on your call is important to us all.

Fingers drumming on the desk, as time ticks slowly on,
Looking at the clock, here’s another ten minutes gone.
Seething now, you grit your teeth, when will this torture end,
Then comes that dreaded sound, beep beep your call is at an end.

Day after day the game is played the whole world round.
A solution to the problem to my knowledge has not been found,
What a difference it would make if this small message came through,
We’re quite busy, leave your number and we’ll call you.
