Music runs through our blood
and we run after it.
We search small coffee shops
and book stores.
Amateurs at an open mic
night with lyrics and licks
we’ve never heard.
Random tunes play through
our cabin and out onto the porch.
An hour’s drive to Nashville
where songs and budding voices
are available on every corner.
A different world down the road.
I arrived on this earth
hearing Daddy sing show tunes and
crooning to my feverish times
“You’re not sick you’re just in love.”
You listened to Frank Sanatra and Dean Martin
and watched your mama dance around the kitchen.
Ballads and Big Band, Reggae and Rock and Roll.
We laugh together at the hooks in country music
and we make up our own:
“There must be two of me ‘cause I’m beside myself.”
We continue to play in harmony
through the rhythm and the silence of our days.
You've distilled the world of music into an irrisistable drink of delight and enjoyment. Each word and line is a gem of sound absorbed through the eyes. Without knowing how to read music, my ears have given me satisffaction unrealized by the great symphony conductors. Thank you so much. - Bill
Yet another "Janet" narrative that paints like a picture the sounds that abound and surround in your life-long experience. A visit to your page never fails to evoke a warm, feel-good Janet - especially when you write in this vein. Warm nostalgia and enduring contentment abound here - and, yes, have to thoroughly agree that music is that which unites body, mind, soul and spirit in the most intricate and tangible of ways... whatever our particular flavour might be. Unites us person to person also. A beautiful sound painting, thank you. Kate xx
Spot on, spot on. . .gotta 'sang hit' ag'in. . .Spot AWWWWWWWn!:)
Music SO important, isn't it. You can bet cavepeople sang before
they came up with Ugh. Like dogs and Yoga, music lowers blood pressure and raises endorphins {or whatever that fancy word is for a happy rush}. Listen hard, hear me sangin' T h a n k e e. 'Pea' <3
You really went doen memory lane stirring all kinds of melodies in me! I so love music, wouldn't know what to do without it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it in such a lovely way!
I hope you and Eddie continue the harmony and rhythm of your days together for a very long time...you are more "in tune" than most songs I hear these days! Great poem Janet.
