Designing Us
My love, sometimes our harmony
must improvise to incorporate
a sour note, and sometimes
we bump heads
in single-minded haste
as we hurry each other along
toward accomplishing a shared goal
Sometimes we’re a bit slow
to yield creative control, to see
our vision realigned
so as to better suit form to function
to hear alternate rhythms
opening up new possibilities
for our dance
Without a doubt, we are both
artists of undeniable genius
in our designs for each other
and our life together, but
we are not always without
creative differences of opinion
in the execution of this project
simply called us.
Nonetheless, through fret and worry
despite often resisting the obvious
somehow we always accomplish
another day, another month
another year of patina, another layer
of grace, a more deeply resounding respect
for the creative process we share
for the living art we recognize
expressed in each other
