1964…

The Beatles did come ashore,

He was but ten years old,

His dad said it would never last,

It has no soul; it will pass fast,

Big bands was his thing,

Could not handle the way Lennon did sing…

Not a good time for a certain little boy that year,

He was always hiding in his room,

He was molested, raped and beaten beyond recognition,

Those that did so released by a local politician,

Never were they brought to justice,

Since then they did die young,

Could have been murder, at least that was the suspicion…

Fearful was this poor little guy,

Would not leave his room, I do not lie,

He would only go out with mom and dad,

The tenth summer for this lad was very sad,

No family did hear of it, no friends knew,

His parents did keep it and him hidden,

From all but a special few,

He did return to school after a summer of painkillers,

Perhaps that the reason this young fellow,

Did drugs and alcohol to help keep him mellow…

Nineteen sixty four, the year of the New York Worlds Fair,

That was how this young fellow did get so hurt, there,

Civil rights was a big issue way back then,

Rockets to the moon, he wished he was on one,

To return, he did not care when…

A painful memory this,

Did the death of the perpetrators make a difference?

Still he would say he isn’t sure, nor does he really know,

Again, he would probably say with that he is straddling the middle of the proverbial fence…

A painfully sad and extremely heartwrenching write, my friend - and something no child should ever have to endure. And I truly hope childhood memories of much better years can replace the memories of this horrific time.

River of Memories: An Appalachian Boyhood by David Thompson

For a time, I perched myself on a flat rock, comparing my life with the Guyandotte River. Just as its tributaries replenish it daily, changing it in some small—sometimes great—degree, so have the day-to-day occurrences of life changed me. Like the ri
