About the mid 70's I worked for my first transport ambulance company when I was still living at home...to say the least, I found it great fun...

Poem Artwork

Back in the day,

My job did say,

To Coney Island Hospital you must go,

Transporting a diabetic/dialysis patient,

After a night of his drinking & too much blow…

Did not want to take the run,

Twas the 4th of July, we wanted to have fun,

The boss did give us both a “line”,

For that, driving to Florida would have been for us, just fine…

Sick he was to the enth degree,

But he was young and wanted to see,

How far he could go, stopping just short of climbing of deaths knee,

Got paid an exorbitant fee for this trip was the company & we…

Lights and siren all the way,

Cruising, sometimes with escort on the parkway,

No tolls for us, we made no stops,

Was fun to kinda turn up our noses to the cops…

Made the many miles to New York in record time,

Afterwards took a dip in the ocean too cool off,

Back in the rig we did then climb,

To get home still on the fourth, for BBQ just in time…

Adventures and stretchers, wonder if you drove through the RED light district with your reds flashing and your siren wailing saying hi to the girls! It would be cool to cruise in a an ambulance cranking Don't Fear The Reaper and some Black Sabbath on the bare bones AM radio...Happy Holidays to you Ed, and Rene and Rufuz...Blessed Be...

Warmly, Sage

A tremendous retrospective Ed.

I cannot image the horrors that paramedics and ambulance drivers have to deal with on a daily basis.

Woof to both of you!

Yeah the good ole days...I used to volunteer riding with Evac on my days off from the ER, hoping to gain more insight...and boy did I!
I had much more respect for those in the profession!
Thanks for sharing~

You're very lucky you didn't ride home on the inside of that ambulance, Ed! The things we do when we're young! Very clever and interesting piece.

CJ

Scary job I say to be driving a ambulance...a family member died crashing into a ambulance...the driver was too tired and fell asleep...caused someone to die and a brother and a sister badly scared for life!!

But I am sure there must be times when it could be fun...like the night my son vometed in the doctors face going through a dip!!
