The days of tall ships and the men that crewed them were not the glory and wonderful images all too often portrayed in the movies and in most books about the period. There was the ravages of terrible weather, food that was often rotten and filled with maggots, trips could last up to two to three years and illness and disease killed more than shipwrecks did.
