I remember nights in my childhood bedroom…

Memories always start out good, but...

--------------------------------

Poem Artwork

The sound of the ocean breaking on the shore,

The summer noises of an amusement park next door,

The shaking of the house & windows in a storm,

Never seemed to notice, or maybe it wasn’t then, overly warm…

A shadow produced by two houses,

Scared me when quite young, looked like a witch bent over,

My dads car in the only garage, the others in the lot,

A view of a small through street, Rags on a leash, “my” rover…

A B&W TV & a smallish stereo, records of The Beatles,

A large walk in closet, with monsters in there residing,

I could see their teeth & smell their fetid breath,

Maybe in the dark it was just my clothing & my stinky sneaks,

Dad put a slide lock on it & a hook, as at night, on its own, it opened…

As I got older the closet was no more the problem,

Dad & Mom argued & fought, mom having a wicked right cross,

I locked myself in my room and hid, till one kicked the door,

I closed my eyes and one would down the hall me toss,

Not the nicest memory, but I surely recall the smell of the rug on the floor,

It does now & again come about, of my memory it does vividly restore…

Never feared anything, except the sound of my Dad and Mom fighting (for 62 years of marriage). We had a dog named Rags, too.

Our childhood fears, if only they replaced our adulthood fears!
Funny how all children see the Boogie man in their rooms at night and hear the scary noises from under their beds!

At least you had a room to remember Ed, nice flashback verse, all I remember is sharing a room with my brothers, they were the monsters at night, in fact no monster would show up because of them

They say smell is the strongest sense - one whiff can staple a memory to your mind in nothing flat. Powerfully penned sadness - I'm so sorry you had to witness your parents fighting. :(

(((HUGS))) love and prayer, Karla.

Hello Ed,

Sad poem of childhood memories. You managed to write it plainly but the pain still stood out, just like a child relating it to another.
Very effective and very strong.

Cynthia
