My son went through a severe depression over losing his boxer, Ziggy, to cancer after 14 years. He gave himself time to grieve and then got another boxer, Ukko (thunder in Finnish). The void became full.
Had me worried for a minute with the new Supreme Court ruling.
But all is well,

I remember Rufuz! I used to read about him in your poetry. You and him were the best of friends. I had been thinking about him from time to time, and I wish he was still with you. Getting another dog that looks like him may make you happy once again like you used to. Hope it works out for you.
Great poetry Ed, and one which spelled out the complete, passionate love between a dog an a human who cares, deeply for it. There will never be another Rufuz, but you aren't getting any younger, I think you really should consider obtaining another dog soon.
There is no love that can compare to the love of a dog. It is special, unique and completely unconditional - But we have to be sure we are ready and able to put in all that is necessary and care for such a precious being. It's only fair. I applaud your refusal to rush into anything rash.

However, his absence in your daily life leaves a big empty hole.
This hole needs to be plugged again ... with LOVE !
