This was my first concert & my first "encounter" with an "older" woman...

Poem Artwork

At 15 I went to Woodstock,
Mom & dad didn’t know,
They in their own world,
Me up in NY on an acid trip,
I didn’t care; I thought they needed to get a grip…

My virginity I lost there,
To an “older” woman,
She was a hippy, name of Claire,
I was so high I didn’t care,
She did spout about Voltaire…

When from the pond area I came,
Directly to the stage I stumbled,
My cousin was there, helping me to walk,
His memories are now mine, as I to you of this talk…

At the stage I fell in love a second time that day,
Jimi Hendrix and his screaming guitar was THE way,
The only way I could see of my future,
For I knew when home I got, I was to die,
My parents were furious; my father had out his belt,
My mother had to hold me down, but I didn’t feel a thing,
They didn’t realize I was too high, as it took me a week to come down…

Certainly a defining event in your life. The older woman and Jimi. It's really too bad that you were so high that you didn't really get the full experience. You certainly went whole hog. I missed Jimi at Monterey in 67 and missed that "older woman", a couple of times, too. Perhaps I should've been high. ;-)

My parents would've been worried sick about where I was. But then, I recall as early as 17, going with friends and relatives to overnight events far away like weekends at Road America with my parents' permission. But in those days, beer was the drug of choice and I didn't like it.

The big one for me was the 'Atlanta Pop Festival' in 1969. Canned Heat. Chicago Transit Authority. Delany and Bonnie. Grand Funk Railroad. Janis Joplin. Led Zeppelin. Spirit. And more. I was stationed in Fort Benning Georgia, in the Army Engineers, just before I went overseas, when I went to that one.

Hendrix was a force. I remember the first time I heard him. I was with the group of fellas I used to surf with at La Jolla Shores in San Diego. Everyone stopped what they were doing and stood frozen. Purple Haze was playing. People were blown away. The guys music was a force of nature.

I really enjoyed some of Voltaire's work. Brilliant guy. I quoted him in one of my books. Voltaire was his nom-de-plume actually. Don't remember his real name. I remember one of his humorous quotes though: "I have only ever made one prayer to God, a very short one: O Lord make my enemies ridiculous. And God granted it." Loved that one. Totally related.

Thanks for stirring some memories, Ed. Hope all is well. rlc
