Happy New Year to all and to all a good WRITE!

Poem Artwork

We used to ride the waves with rubber rafts,

Long before we realized that life was to be feared,

And long before the inception of the surf board,

We rode these rafts on our knees almost standing,

A bunch of us did as a group of riders be banding…

We also to a smaller degree did body surf,

Riding in on a wave with the head up and out of the wave,

Other kids thought it so cool they asked us to teach them,

We taught them & soon they all did as well ride the way we craved…

On the beach all day with cut off shorts, no shirts & no shoes,

Stepping on crabs every so often while standing in the sea,

Seaweed and jellyfish floating on the surface,

No constant talk of sharks, so we had no fear, it’s easy to see,

Loved those days, memories that will abound forever and a day,

I will take these wonderful memories of the Jersey shore to my grave.

My first job was selling ice cream and orange drinks on Coney Island
and Brighton Beach in Brooklyn, NY at 14 yrs. young. We sold a freezer box full and then eat whatever was left. Usually it was one or two chocolate sundaes. What a treat! Then we had 15 cents to take the train home and do it all over again the next day. FUN!

Ed! These are some beautiful memories! I could feel the sand and hear the surf through your words and it was lovely! This has got to be one of your best!

Love ya!

We all have memories of when we were young and thought we were free to do great things. But yours, on the seashore, were special, creating a whole lifestyle for those that loved to catch the waves.

The only time I tried it, we had a small, inflatable "boogie board?" About 2 feet wide and 3 feet long that we used to lay on and buoy us up. Without it, I was so skinny and had stretch a high bone and muscle to fat ratio, that without swimming rapidly, would sink underwater.

A wonderful write that brings back memories of years gone past when vacationing in Virginia near the Chesapeake Bay and the Outer Banks in Nags Head, riding a rubber raft along the rolling waves.

Great memories for sure. I think, that as we get older, the trick is to keep making new memories, Or at least exaggerate the ones we already have. The older I get, the better I was.
