Damn Those Huey Helicopters

Huey Helicopters were of a great help in the jungle, but here they just put the fear of god in me, for some reason...

DAMN THOSE HUEY HELICOPTERS…

THEY COME FROM A DISTANCE,

I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE,

I HAVE HEARD THEM ALL BEFORE,

IN THE JUNGLE I KNEW, I WAS SO SURE.

THEY SCARE ME NOW, AS THEY DID THEN,

EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE OURS,

THEY COULD REALLY SCREW UP OUR MISSION,

FIRING ROCKETS, STRING 50 CALIBRE’S, & DROPPING ORANGE,

THEY COULD CREATE SUCH A RUCKUSS ON CHARLIES TOWERS.

BUT THEY NEVER EVEN KNEW WE WERE THERE,

THAT WAS THE FEAR I HAD THEN AND NOW,

WE HID IN CHARLIES DENS & LAIRS,

BUT EVEN THAT DIDN’T HELP,

THE ORANGE GLOW DID STAY, FAR INTO FUTURE YEARS.

I HEAR IT NOW, FROM FAR AWAY, FEEL LIKE SCREAMING,

OR TAKING COVER THINKING “IN COMING”,

THERE IS ONE OUTSIDE NOW, CIRCLING FOR SOME REASON,

THEY USE THEM FOR SEARCH AND RESCUE, BUT THIS GUY IS LOW,

BARELY MOVING, GOING ALONG SO SLOW,

just about staying  up in the air…

they were a great help in the jungle over there,

picking up the wounded that may not make it without help,

but now that we’re home, they just ignite, dreams so fearful,

I awake in a cold sweat  and find that “scare” is still a word used here.

Wish he would just leave & let me eat my dinner, isn’t that fair?

Ed;

Funny story re" Hueys. Lived in Florida for a while. House, swimming pool (lighted of course), etc. Used to be a radio op in Army so one night while swimming an airliner flew overhead. Covered the pool light several times, sending out an SOS. Laughed about it until woken up that night by a police Huey circling our house. Thought "Oh sh-t, I've done it now." It finally left and never came back. Still don't know why it came but I do wonder if...

Ed, I heard them at Kent State University. At the time, it was like a war zone. Could have been about the same time, if you were Vietnam. While reading this, I felt that fear I felt back then, again. Good poem.

I posted two more paintings.

Police choppers circle the apartment complex out my window often and unnerve me. And I never experience Nam.
