Nothing I Could've Done

Thought I'd try something different. Any feedback would be appreciated.

 NOTHING I COULD’VE DONE

There was nothing I could’ve done differently.

I’ve always hated the way that sounds.

Like it’s some kind of an excuse.

A cop out.

Still I come back to the truth of the matter,

Even though doubts are hard to let go.

I knew the end was coming,

Like a death painful and slow.

It ended without a whimper,

XXXed out, it was time for me to leave.

No definite answer, Michael. Nothing is fully a given. You do your best to encourage an outcome in keeping with your best intentions. You celebrate what arrives intact and don't beat yourself up when there is an out outcome different from your wishes.
Stating that advice is easier than living it. Count me among those who has missed the ideal mark numerous times.
As to your poem, it is honest and that probably counts the most.

I am all for poetry being an excellent way to "expand on your thoughts." I stand by poetry as a vehicle to clear your thoughts in a positive way. Worked for me, that is a fact.

If you want to expand on your thoughts, try writing an essay. Poems and short stories are not good vehicles for facts and clarity. When you can hit all three genre out of the park, you're home--you know, back where your started!

I understand, though perhaps due to a different situation. Just stay true to who you are. Wonderfully written though sad.

Love ya!

This poem, Michael, is quite different from your usual comic turn. There is a sober quality to the poem; something had ended, we know not what and perhaps don't need to know. There is an understated quality to the poem that works quite well, making the poem most effective. Fine work here. John
