Only a few weeks after her memorial service
I walk alone on the familiar path where
we strolled many times before and
where today I smile recalling a
special morning of learning about the gift of life.
She sees the brown furry legs kicking
to right themselves to run away from
humans with their steel trap which
had torn skin and muscle making
escape impossible for an injured rabbit,
now in her hands for treatment.
Cradling it to her bosom she nods pensively feeling
a strong heartbeat while taking inventory before
striding toward home for medications.
Our walk ended, I follow in quick-step,
handing over my sweater for
a wild bunny’s warmth in her bid to
keep it alive in a world of cruelty.
Watching her with ointment and bandages,
I reflect on my good fortune to live in
her lifetime and admire a most exceptional woman.
