Long Shadows

Just before our sun bids adieu

A curious thing I'm telling you

These long shadows crawl along

Pushed by sun rays still strong

Smoothing things flat to earth

Rolling thin and losing worth

Shadow waves kiss us goodnight

Until a new morning rises bright

A new observation of something we look at every day with little thought. This is the way of the poet.

I attended a wedding this afternoon, on bluffs above the river, surrrounded by old Georgian brick buildinge and huge oaks thinking that the cool temperatures would chill the afternoon...but the chill waited for the young bride and groom to share vows, while the celbration waxed into the flattening shadows and their waves, and river sounds competing with a harp. How interesting to read the very words that described those shadows of my afternoon...

Like one last empowered projection, larger than life, the shadows yield to the night. Beautiful poem.

Delightful, Darlin Bill... and so where I'm at among the heaths and heathers of Tudor England right now! I have never known weather to be able to turn so quickly or the light to change with such dexterity... no wonder the coast is the artists' muse... But one thing is for sure... the quality and diversity of your poetry NEVER changes. Prostratin meself here!! LOL K xx

I have always enjoyed the shadows stretching into the night but have never found the words. You have. Excellent

A wise philosophical observance illustrated by moving metaphorical imagery. Enjoyed it.

This is lovely, Bill. I enjoy your use of softly flowing words -- and your image above is perfect to go with the poem. Very nice, very nice.

I like this. Your words, 'Rolling thin and losing worth', made me think of nature as a baker, using a rolling pin to flatten the shadows, only going a little too far with it...

My kind of morning described as only a good poet can mince morning with the Muse.
