From under his two old cotton blankets
dressed in rags thin as the newspapers covering him
he emerges slowly into another day
one of longing and dread
wanting the day over before it starts
but knowing it would last until
another night of constantly chilled fitful sleep
Centuries ago he had come to terms
with daytime forcing his hunt for food
through panhandling and stealing
but the night is forever cold and dangerous
when some dope-filled and sleep-crazed guy
might do his best to kill you
not knowing that his old war had long ago ended
Meeting each morning he sets out for the Mission
where hot coffee and forced smiles waited
with three-day-old cold donated donuts
and the panhandling
All could wait until after today's plastic plate of warm scrambled eggs
It was Wednesday and the lady would be by soon
bringing clean used clothes and health food packets
which he sold to buy smokes and a reefer or two
After all a man had to have his cigar
while sipping a shot of brandy
in order to get through the day but hell
he knows there ain't no day worth getting through
if the damn honest-to-God truth be known
It's funny how we think the homeless begs for money for liquor when so many were lead to the street by states (like Georgia) who turned their backs on troubled minds. Heartless has another meaning in this case. Thank you for giving some a voice.
Love and peace,
Susan
I have just come here from Andy's page and my bones are chilled through and my organs of human sympathy bulging against the backs of me eyes... Makes me feel extraordinarily powerless, guilty and feeble... not least of all because I personally could not last 5 minutes in sub-75 degree temperatures. So well articulated and sketched for us here, Bill. The sense of futility is heart-breaking. Bless you and thank you. K xx
My heart breaks as I read this...so many live this life and it seems here lately the numbers are growing and include families, once thriving and financially secure. Your words are real, raw, and poignant... well done, my honest-to-God friend.

Great poem, Bill -- real, raw, believable.

Homelessness is so hard for me to understand. I hate it so bad! In the land of opportunities how can this be common? You describe it so well as if you understand it. Very sad but so true Bill. I would love to see an end to this but as long as humanity exist, so will this problem.
This is a book of free verse poetry that addresses the seven main tests in life and offers some sensible solutions to passing those tests with minimal discomfort.
Inspirational poetry, written from the heart and soul. Verses that are well-suited for reading on a rainy day and that are guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.
