What was a mound of dirt
when he buried her
is now flat
raw hardened cracked dirt
nothing saying it is a grave
the knoll above the creek
is higher than flood water
grass will grow over
come spring rains
Buried in their favorite spot
where she sat beside him
fishing for hours
sharing lunch or supper
she will be there
when he fishes again
on a warmer day
when he comes back
with her grown-up puppy

Thanks for the memories Bill. While reading this, I looked at my very old dog, laying here very comfortable, looking me right dead in the eye; and I remember days gone by when we share many picnics and walks. Now we both lay around a lot, and dream of better days to come. Sweet memories for such a small price, such devotion for just a little attention. Yeh, dogs are mans (women) best friends. They never ever tell your secrets either!!

Linda

I'm always moved by the connection between animals and their people. Very touching. JM
This brings back some bittersweet memories about my Dad and the dog that he swore we wouldn't keep...)) Lady would make the walk to the garden with him every day.. and he buried her right at the edge of it.. Thank you for this one, my kind friend...) Myrna

We loose someone young, caring a true friend...
Deeply touching poem
Tender as a baby's smile and wonderful in imagery. This is sweet and makes me tear up. This reminds me of fishing with my dad and the creatures all around. Live,
Susan
This is beautiful, Bill -- a fitting tribute to a favorite and adored pet. Dogs are wonderful, aren't they? They ask for so little and give so much love. Well done!
