Dignity
I grew up the day I saw a coffin cradle a man
with no room to spare
It seemed to be a most undignified way to go
his body on display as an exhibit
Why don't we bury a body in wood only
so nature can reclaim its dust to dust
Time will have its way with metal and cement
instead of wood to travel with the body
Modern practices allow dignified burial
in a decomposable container for ashes
Cremating a useless body with high heat
offers spiritual confirmation that something
of a loved one rejoins our earth
as a part of its life giving air and in that
we may find loving comfort in the sharing
Great write my friend...you know really doesn't matter to me either way! Buried or cremated...it's the condition of our heart when we take our last breath that counts! It's the destination! Heaven...If I choose to be buried, I don't want a viewing. Set up a few pictures of me as my family and friends remember me, pictures of me with my family, me with my students, and enjoying life...that's how I want to be remembered with a big smile, knowing in my heart that I am Heaven bound! Fantastic offering!

I agree, Bill. Cremation for me, too, and I surely don't want to be viewed in a funeral home! A nice private ceremony for family to say good-bye will do, then cremation -- blow my ashes somewhere over the Caribbean from a cruise ship, please. Well thought out poem, and very well expressed.

I'm with you on this, Bill. I sure don't want to be "buried" in the ground. It seems insane to me that we waste so much space. Maybe I'm "off base" here but your verses spoke to me. Thank you.

Your view of cremation is touching. I love your notion of mixing with the air. The following I have never understood:
Some folks think that nature won't have its way
