There was a time when life was simple
like an ice cream soda at the drug store
A time when a pound of round steak
was breakfast for six with biscuits/gravy
A time stretching my dog Bo and me to
a whole day on filled biscuits and water
A time of the flu in everybody's house
closing schools work places and theaters
A time that midwives helped deliver
babies in homes with no costly doctor
A time that visiting carnivals gave relief
from radio recordings and preaching
A time in December of a poverty Santa
leaving clothes fruit dolls and small toys
A time that serial movies made us sweat
out a week for Saturday's next episode
A time when those who broke rules were
guided to do better with butt whackings
A time deeply sad when everyone who
could attended a funeral and the burial
A time of driving lessons at fourteen
but all dating waited until seventeen
A time of reward after going on a date
ending with one quick lips-to-lips kiss
A time of no sex until marriage but
more good times in things that lasted
You make me nostalgic for a simpler time, where everyone knew their neighbor, everybody helped each other and respect was not just a word but an action.
A further collection of poems, many from years in the Middle East, but also the California San Francisco and Central Coast areas (Santa Cruz, Carmel, Big Sur, Berkeley, etc.).
