Silent dark strictest of early morning guard
my sleep now disturbed without a reason
but giving in to an, I arise and look outside.
In the crisp chill between bed and thermostat
is a promise to return to womblike warmth.
But, hoot coffee wins out, and pulling back
kitchen curtains, I see nothing but frigid
darkness until floodlight fill the yard with
a private snow blanker pure soft and pure.
Darting eyes sweep an entire back yard,
one without color, without movement, but
revealing a covering of undisturbed snow.
Quickly outside I see windblown rivulet
mounds of snow covering lightly sleeping
Fall flowers amazingly still in full bloom.
Recording photos and hours later, I marvel
how the snow has preserved the blooms
keeping each petal from freezing depth.
Their rare covering had sealed floral life
while crystal snow waited a sun's melting.
So well observed, William, and you took me both places in hot succession... from the snuggling back down to the expansion of the warming thaw. In two stanzas we have two wonderfully contrasting effects of that dazzling pristine blanket! :)) xx
It is amazing somtimes how nature can with a drop of temperature paint a picture so starkly beautiful that man can only stare with awe. Great capture here Bill.
yes, the snow tucks those beautiful blooms in for a winters rest only to be brought to life with the warmth of the spring. wonderful and full of color.
Absolutely beautiful with colors of the seasons about and snuggled underneath. I admire your poems that place the visual abundantly upon this table.
