My Successor

They didn't appoint as my successor the one
I had selected upon my retirement.
The position went to a much younger person;
A woman who had always wanted to
know, "Why?"
She was a bright one in meetings, and
never brash.
Her big jump pleased me greatly, but
was a big surprise.
She had a way about her, and probably
questioned everyone.
She knew the way to succeed and to
be recognized.
She was learning how others thought,
and what they knew.
Her drive to know paid off, and now,
she was in charge.
I was taken aback when she came into
my office,
while I was packing up my personals,
to give me a hug.
She added a specific statement of deep
appreciation for
my straightforward answers to her
constant questioning.

She left with, "Without your teaching,
it couldn't have happened!"
