Red Faces


Moving to a new city during mid-summer
my job included golf club membership
We dressed for the dinner-dance which
would open the fall season
My wife wore a nice dress and
I chose one of my dark suits
We arrived at the club in a sea of formal clothes
worn by couples entering the big doors
Going home to change was not an option
since the reception line was first order
We decided that we would not be
embarrassed or suffer guilt by staying
When the doorman asked if were at
the right place we smiled and got in line
Introducing ourselves to the first couple
the two proved gracious and understanding
They explained us to the second couple
and each did the same until we faced
the club president who upon learning of
our plight asked us along with his wife to
accompany them to the podium where
he presented the two of us to clubs members
as strong minded and nervy newcomers who
who had stayed the course and
who would from that evening be
known as their new red faced friends
