As neighbors the younger couple deferred to
the long married twosome next door taking
more than a year to use first names as
genuine friendship permits trust and
a parents-kids alliance keeps
them close and comfortable until
illness and a fatal accident sweep away
a husband and a wife
one young one older leaving
a loneliness within the survivors staying
close by constantly doing
those little things for each other.
The younger woman’s reliance on
his attentiveness blossoms at
her home cooked dinner for two
including their cheerful toasts
and frequent sipping exceeding
their limits for the grape
but setting the stage for
the fist kiss and mutual release of
pent up hunger to culminate
in a bed of heartache and yearning
as an older and patient lover introduces
slower more tender ways for
her to journey on passion’s path
which sees deep devotion ignite
and flare into the sharing of
a wondrous reason for loving anew.
