DEMENTED

Punch-drunk after a week of storms,
the beach is crazy today:

the reed bed spills its saucer of tea,
flooding the back of the beach;
sunken leaves swirling
like swollen dregs.

Ageing shoreline tilts unsteadily,
buttressed by walls of choppy seas
that tremble and stutter with height.

Surf’s spumes of raging spittle hiss,
tonguing fresh stammerings
into ridges of sand.

And cliff-top buildings jostle,
slide like bleached unruly dentures
on shrunken gums of older women
who throw back their heads in
rafts of laughter as winds inflate their skirts.

A rogue wave slaps me on the backside
as I struggle to keep my footing,

tells me soon I shall be one of them.

What a wondrous work this is, the natural surrealism of nature having its way with lunacy and anarchy as the human kingdom takes survey. More and more of those "rogue waves" are slapping surprised bottoms and more and more of those bottoms are being used to float with uncommon grace:-) Powerful lessons in DEMENTED for this world flooded with storms. Much gratitude to the poet's pen for all of them.

The everchanging nature of land and seascape in this poem symbolize both the ephemerality and permanence of living and life...I like the subtle humor.

Ah sweet Kate, you captured the very essence that makes the beach and the sea the most romantic place to die, perhaps if dementia is part of the aging process then what better way to follow lifes natural progression then by the agelessness of the very oceans. Always changing the shape of the landscape but never really changing itself. I can picture you walking along your treasured shore and even see the wind bellowing your skirts but most of all sweet Kate I smile as I hear the joy of your laughter above the surf. Beautiful work.

the wind and sea can change the tides in your mind and allow you to see into the variables of your peripheral vision ... what you make of it depends on your insight ...

as always, your images stimulate and invoke the depths of your inner self in respect to your outer being, with the right touch of humor to make it perfectly specious ...

This poem swirls in so many directions, Kate, much like a very restless sea after a heavy storm, struggling to find its center and re-establish its equilibrium. There is so much energy woven into each line and your humor wafts through every stanza. Very nice, Kate.
Take care,
Sherry

The very artwork visualized with your pen is the genuis of a master. I paint with the palette in my thoughts then words spit like a tube of paint. You are an artist sweet Kate. A master.

Your word-pictures just boggle my mind! You have amazing talent to describe scenes with an array of images.
What an affront to have a wave reveal your age like that! You should have slapped it back. The verse about the women is especially inspired. A great poem.

What a soggy vivid picture you paint for us. You give a brief visit to your beach and homeland... a study in your love for, and toleration of, the elements. The poem is superior in all categories, and I praise your talent once again.

Time marches us on from birth to...but there is too much diversity after that "to". For some die before they are born, others young like my sister, others in their prime of life and others old. And perhaps you're right in that aging can bring dementia. I which case it's better to die young. Whatever life holds in store for us, we always have the Supreme one looking after us. Victor
