NICE GIRLS

“Nice girls sit up straight
and cross their legs just so”,
mum advised as we sat
outside the tea shop, waiting
for her best friend.

By the time said friend arrived,
I knew which knife nice girls use
and how not to spoon the jam or
blow bubbles in my milkshake.

Across the street, Mandy Williams
from school was hauling her jeans
tighter over her wishbone thighs
and tucking her blouse in taut,
emphasising the soft buds of her chest;

I smoothed crumbs from my A-line
and planted my feet firmly,
extravagantly flicking my napkin
and placing it with precision across my lap
when I saw her staring across.

But I frowned and scraped my hair slide
hard against my slicked-back fringe
when, appearing from the crowd,
Billy from Third Form caught Mandy
by the waist and pulled the band
from her pony tail, spinning her round
and roughly rubbing his fat lips against hers.

Mother hadn’t mentioned that one,
but it sure looked nice to me.

I've looked for nice girls my entire life.
I think it's time to flip the coin
and live
beyond
reason.

my mother yanked me into the house by my ponytail when a boy tried to hold my hand....there was no discussing kissing....i think that's what the girlfriends are for...:)

Being brought up proper tries to steer you away from such outward tomfoolery. But a kiss is still a kiss and is longed for.

As usual, guys, this is mostly fiction, but of course!! :)) ... Except for my Mother's pretensions! Any "Mandy" figure totally had my awe and respect and made me feel very little and quivery by comparison... So, no Ed... not "nasty" Mandy Williams but rather "OMG Mandy Williams!" Thanks people... Felix, I will try to dig an old photo out when I get back home... I'll post it here again if I do! No surprises, I don't think... LOL K xx

PS... Darlin Alexandra... We all KNOW for certain sure you'd look totally gorgeous even in an A-line black plastic dustbin liner, so no worries! :)) xx

Kate, we can be so innocent but in a flash find out life has a lot more interesting things we need to search out...this is expressed beautifully and made this reader sit for awhile to absorb the picture.

LOL! Oh, yes, my dearest Miss Kate... all nice girls do find out all about those nice things sooner or later... just like their mothers did! ;0) And, you know... I can still remember those blasted A-lines vividly. They were called the "Courrèges" look, after the French designer... and I felt rather like a disgruntled "tinkerbell" in them, even if I was supposed to be much too young to care. boy, did I loath them! Thank goodness for the jeans that came to the rescue... and which my very nice mother also wore, with great panache, and looking absolutely gorgeous in them, too! LOL! (The name of the one I wanted to kick in the shins in those days was Bernardette... and they sure were skinny shins, too, LOL!) Now, that you have made me unearth my shameful A-line era's memories, **blushie blushie**, I'm going to write a comment to your previous (fabulous) poem. And, btw... you're one of the nicest, multiflavoured, multitalented girls I've ever come across, definitely!
This bad girl, with lots of love and {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}

I can truly see this taking place. In my mind I can actually see what you would have looked like as a teen and how you would have been torn between the good girl/bad girl problem that all young ladies face. I think perhaps you would have stuck to the good girl but with a mystery smile and innocent touch to the boys arms that would have driven them wild anyway and they would have valued any kisses you deemed appropriate.

Too bad you didn't have a picture of you from those years I would love to see if it matches the one I have in my head
hugs and very chaste cyber kiss

Momma never mentioned that one? Hmmm. Guess she didn't wanna tell you ALL her secrets. Me, I love blowing bubbles in milkshakes, and the racket you can make sucking up that last smidge with a straw from those bottom corners of the glass. Hey, why be here if you can't have fun! Grin.

You betcha it looked nice, but mother, being a mother (and remembering when she wasn't a mother) chose not to make you aware of the "other" side of being nice. Of course, she knew you would eventually catch on . . .

There's a time for taking tea with pinkie extended :) and a time to down a milkshake, blow bubbles furiously and then put the carton on the pavement upside down, jump on it and yell with delight as it goes bang like a canon HAHAHA used to love doing that outside the Parthenon Bars. Hmmmm as for that yobbo planting a sloppy one, well....I'm a nice girl and I'm not saying hehe.
Neat write here Kate, brought back some well savoured memories, thanks for that.
