Silly event that happen years ago plus firecrackers aren't only things with short fuse!!!

Poem Artwork

Short Fuse!!!!!!!!!

Rockets bursting in the air reds, whites, and blues

Windows rattling from the booms

Kids relax and just play with sparkles

Old pro dad will shoot the big ones off

Driveway cleared and the launch pad tonight it will be

As I set all the fireworks so we can fire them safely

Each rocket lights and off into the sky it flies

Final exploding before they’re waiting bright eyes

Crying and yelling wanting more and more

Old dad rushes back to the fireworks store

Hands over another $100 bill

Kids are worth giving them few more thrills

Louder and brighter the rockets become

Finally we reach our final one

Mmmm!!! short fuse I see on this one

Better light it quick then run

Strikes my match and reach over to the fuse

Bam!! Bang!!  For sure it just blew

Exploding next me no time to run

MY pants on fire now kids are really having fun

Running fast as I hop over the fence

One massive leap into the pool as self-defense

Wife just gives me her stupid “You Are Look”

Kids yell, “Dad you really did good your pants are burnt like when mom cooks”

So the jest of this poem I will reveal to you now

Leave the shooting the fire works to professional crowd

Kids thanked us as they headed off to bed

Never realizing they lit mom’s short fuse for what they said

I love watching fireworks, but am sort of afraid of them.
But - you wrote this beautifully.
PS: Pls post a pic of your burning pants next time.

Having known you for several years - I can actually imagine this in my mind - oh how they must have howled at Dad! But, at the same time, what a wonderful memory to have. Thanks so much for sharing with us.

"Short Fuse" delivers two profound messages... "FIRE BURNS AND KILL, JUST LIKE WORDS!"

"Leave the shooting the fire works to professional crowd" - AND LET US POLISH OUR LANGUAGE AND USE WORDS THAT STRIKE CREATIVITY, KINDNESS AND TOGETHERNESS.

I salute You, Sublime Poet!

Long healthy creative and productive life through a blissful living.

Ha! As if your story isn't hilarious enough (which it is!) I'm also rolling around at Ed Kostro down there... his mother in law? Yikes! hehe... Ahhhhh... what we won't do for our kids, eh? But, blow ourselves up? This is a great cautionary tale but I fear too many adults also think 'aw, it can't happen to me'... Yeah right! I do thank you for sharing a fabulous memory ... "and the rockets red glare..." (grin) katy xox.

:) I am glad you've told everyone to leave the fireworks to the professionals! I could not understand why my neighbors would want to light these small fireworks when they could watch a huge show in Manhattan on tv- but I said to myself that it is nice to actually be there, even if it's only a few sparklers!! You've really caught the Fourth of July family spirit in this poem.

I've never figured how me, as a big kid myself, can ever offer either sage advice or sound example to my children who are FAR more streetwise and safety-conscious it seems to me. Actually, perhaps it is my own foolhardiness and "having to look after Mum" that has caused them to be sensible themselves. So... perhaps, like you, I haven't done TOO bad a job at childrearing after all! I'm sure we can all put our hands up and admit a few howlers in life like this, John, and thank you for testifying to this. LOVED your biog, by the way. You sound like someone who has always, and always will, do much to bring strength and encouragement to others - as typified by this write. Thank you. Kate x

(((john)))

o, this brought back memories--my daddy loves "boom booms" (as he calls 'em) and until a couple years ago, would set 'em off...much to the annoyance of the neighbors and their local police dept. LOL he almost got arrested, so he doesn't fire 'em off anymore

thanks for the memory jogs in this hysterical write--

((((HUGS)))), love and happy fourth of july, karla. :)

Extremely funny, but extremely frightening, too, Tommy. And I can relate. I once tossed a large firecracker into the air, the wind grabbed it, and it landed in my mother-in-law's hair.

Luckily, that one had a very long fuse, and we were able to get it off her, before it exploded.

HAHAHAHAAHAHA! oh my goodness....heheheehh....glad it was not more serious...but considering how well I know the "look", I would be willing to bet the singe from the firecrackers was nothing compared to the slow burn from the wife.
Your comments about your wifes cooking reminded me of one of my favorite phrases...which by the way, I never use in my wife's presense anymore...
it goes...."Cooking with a blowtorch and a prayerr"
Good job here, Tommy
