" I won't let the Sun go down on me "

............................................................

I walked along the sandy shore today

just above the high tide water line

the surging aquamarine waves licking at my ankles

as I await developements on my sensors

artic skuas wheeling and arcing above my head

and a great black backed gull

winged cumbersomely out to sea

my mind is clear and empty of all chatter

the way I like it to be

as I bend down and pick up a periwinkle

marvelling at its corrugated contours

I feel completely at ease out here

away from the mindless morons and yuppies

with their perverted invective and ways

grace comes in many shapes and forms

and  for me I love to be solitary

as I have always been a loner in life

I found our favorite niche on the sea cliff

where we used to sit, and watch the world turn

it seems like centuries ago

I make myself comfortable on the ledge

as scattered memories fill my soul

a foraging gannet heads out to Ailsa Craig rock

to rejoin its countless counterparts on the sheer, steep cliffs

I realised a long time ago

there is a veil to stop us knowing

what is on the other side of this madness

a school of porpoises have invaded the bay

searching for plankton within the sheltered coves

as I cast my gaze upon the distant horizon

the slanting spring sunshine dazzles my eyes

I heard your voice again in my heart

you said its immaterial what other people think

and to conquer fear is the purpose of life

a hermit crab scuttled towards a seaweed covered rock

a flock of sandpipers raced along the shore

as I rested my head and closed my eyes

sinking deep into meditative trance

the tang of salt air invigorating my soul

and I whisperd a silent prayer within myself

in complete harmony with my breath

as my spirit soared within my psyche

Complete harmony...those moments are rare and therefore so very cherished. It sounds wonderful, a peaceful place, filled with harmony, what more can one ask for! Great write,

"and to conquer fear is the purpose of life" is a heavy line, Peter. I have conquered all fears through intense therapy years ago, but I have one remaining fear that I try endlessly to conquer, and that is the fear of rejection. I HATE dismissal. It has made me feel so invalidated at times in my life and it hangs on like a thorn. Although I don't ever feel invalidated now, I do have times when I feel I have been dismissed. Like you, I go to a very meditative environment, say my Goddess prayer, and come back from Sage's Meadow refreshed, "as my spirit soared within my psyche."

I am the same. Nature provides me with entertainment. The otters are the happiest I know. We had a pair off Wilmington Island when my children were young. They'd come take a dip in the neighbors pool...play with the dog in the creek and bump you out of the chaise for attention. They are monogamous creatures too. To watch them made my heart full and nothing about us civilized people could touch it

Your poem took me back to Wilmington Island and Sammie and Sarah...the names we gave our little sleek friends.
Well done.

I won't let the sun go down on me either, now the mother, that's a different story. LOL Sitting alone and with the elements give you a backdrop of peace and serenity one does manage to eek out some wonderful words of wisdom and pure, unadultrated peace, away from the rat race and the asrtificial clamour, at least the gulls clamor in its honest search for life sustaining food.

Sounds like a wonderful spot to reflect on life's mysteries, nature's wonders, and that mystifying veil which 'stops us knowing what's on the other side of this madness.'

And, of course, I love the picture, and that intriguing signpost.

Wonderful write, Peter. Marvelous imagery. How I love the sea and otters. Did you ever see the film, "Ring of Bright Water"?...That veil you speak of-yes I do believe you're right...This poem has the feel of a journal, expressing the internal and external worlds. Thank you for the peek into both...

Lin

Epiphany by Gary Stephens

“We’re going to use nine megaton warheads in space and we’re not sure they’re large enough to be effective. Why would you even consider using kiloton-range surface-to-air warheads as back-up?” The answer was succinct. “Because they’re all we have.”
