Old small towns are silently disappearing It's nice to know a few have still survived...
The Old Courthouse In Yates Centre
Young lovers sitting on a wrought iron bench
In front of those old courthouse eyes
Arms around each other lovingly
Making memories with deep sighs
These old iron benches could tell a story
A county history of romance lives here
Witnessed by that old building of buffalo brick
Those old windows seem to blatantly stare
Some say the iron in those old benches
Was meant for cannons for the Southern cause
Some even say General Lee once sat there
When he decided to stop and take a pause
The wooden slats now worn butt smooth
The rust must be scraped away each year
Each spring another coat of coal black paint
Is painted on with loving care
The towering trees provide the shade
Against the Kansas sun at noon
In the night they frame the stars that
Compliment a Kansas harvest moon
Small town lives on in Yates Center
It’s courthouse a symbol of its charm
I hope the Lord will always protect it
Keep it always safe from harm.
I grew up in a very small town in Indiana. I went back 25 years later and it was like stepping back into a time warp. Nothing had changed. Childhood friends married each other and stayed... many teaching in the same classrooms we went to as children... my childhood home was still standing and lived in by childhood friends... eerie, yet, I'm so glad it it was preserved that way.

I conjured up pictures of the old courthouse in the county where I grew up in. A warm sentimental write here Felix.

This could be any small town anywhere. Anyone would be glad to claim this as their own town and courthouse. History has been made on the benches a hundred times over, and where I live the inside of the courthouse is as quaint as the outside. It is a place to gather for our annual town celebration, with not a bench empty. And yes the courthouse is the symbol of charm for my town, USA. Karen
Strong tenderness and nostalgia here, Felix, and you carry your enthusiasm through to us readers so that we, too, can fall in love with the place. Vividly painted - can almost see myself sitting on that bench, and the strong historical links gives depth and weightiness... I am sure this wonderful place WILL endure! TY Kate xx
