Just crossing over the border from the province of Nova Scotia into New Brunswick you will enter a barren area known as the Tantramar Marsh and above it sits Fort Beujesour one of the last French Forts in lower Canada before she became English controlled. This fictional work takes place here where fog is a weekly occurence and the eeriness of the place chills the blood, enjoy...

Poem Artwork

The Virgin Maiden of the Tantramar Marsh

The wild winds blowing across the Tantramar Marsh

Scream revenge for the maiden who died in the night

Pale is the maiden, the sweet tender maiden

Who’s blood was the cost of a demon’s delight

On the shores of the Tantramar the crime he committed

When the gentry met the young maiden walking alone

She pleaded for mercy, but no mercy was given

The pour young maiden’s good virtue he took for his own

Next morning they searched but no body was found

They say she died on the marsh by her  own hand alone

Till on the banks of the river they found her possessions

And the blood on his knife told her story unknown

Now some say on the gleaning of the first Harvest moon

On the Tantramar Marsh neath Fort Beaujesour’s heights

You may see a young maiden who once sobbed alone

Now laughs as his ghost hangs forever on cold Autumn nights

Fee:

I'm chilled to the bone. A gripping tale of horror eerily told. The last laugh seems to be on no one - but a wonderful twist it is.

Excellent.

Kathy

An eerie, compelling work Fee that has a Bronte-like quality...as I read I could almost taste the mists and hear the howl of hounds. Vivid imagery ... Masterful stuff. Hugs, Panda :)

Damp and cold marshes give me the chills at the best of times, Felix... Now I'm living on one, but happily it is very well-drained and sunny, a heathland, I guess, though covered with tea-like peat bogs. Can just so imagine this state of affairs. And yes, the mist lingers. Very authentic and not so very far from truth, would be my estimation. Sadness hangs in the atmosphere at such places. TY for this. Kate xx

Fee,

You have to expand on these folklores and making them into short stories. This story is power, haunting, yet has a beautiful side to it. And the picture, enhances the beauty of your words.

Sweet Fee, this is breathtaking - and the imagery is so vivid, it actually gives the reader chills, as if we were suddenly "frozen" by that eerie scenario. It's a magnificent story, brilliantly written - and I'm glad that, this morning, life awarded me some quiet moments to read, enjoy, and express my fascination. Hope all has been going well with you, my friend.
