Wow, talk about the power of the pen. Within a few lines we were all on a joyous ride. Then line by line you extracted emotion after emotion from deep within leaving them scattered and shattered on the ground. What’s in that sigh? Acceptance, loss of innocence, maturity, sadness? Heart wrenching for both the father and the little girl. Yet, because of the first lines, she will always stay daddy’s little girl--albeit wiser. Strong but true write.
This is a softer lesson about relationships and the dedication to our families that seem to disappear with alcohol. I know what alcohol can do to families. It destroyed mine after 23 years. You would think after a man loses his family...he would learn. True alcoholics just find a drinking buddy to condition that loss.
Your poem is about the possiblity of divorce and how the little girl is impacted by her knight in shining armor. Divorce devastates the entire family. When families stuck together through thick and thin, people seemed happier. I wish it were still the case.
Amen to Alexandra's thoughts, but the reality of the anguish in both parents' and children's hearts is oh so real and oh so tough. You developed this scenario with breathtaking emotional precision, Felix, and had me hanging on every nouance and meaning. Fee, I just felt this grinding down into pain, verse after verse. You penned this so well. We need for our little girl to have hope, to have glee when she gets a hug. This poem is a reality-check because too many homes are so destroyed ...
No matter how many sad things may be happening in their parents' life that their loving children may not understand... two fundamental things should the parents care to convey, preferably with plenty of hugs lacing the dialogue - one, that whatever may be happening, is not the child or the children's fault... and the other, that whatever may happen, both Mom and Dad will go on loving him or her or them... as their most precious, joint masterpiece.
