Always thought I lived in other times and this write was from my days in the old West...

The Poker Game at The Black Rose

By Fee

The poker cards were arrayed as the hands were displayed

And the stakes went up at the Black Rose that night

The money pile was high, and I breathed a sigh

As I flipped my last hole card up in plain sight

Two threes and three ones, adds up to a tidy sum

Black Ed’s two pair looked sad next to my tight

I wore a long grin, as I raked all the money in

Black Ed just swore, and spit on the floor

Sweet Kate and La Belle at the bar, looked on from a far

And gave me winks that I could hardly ignore

I was enjoying the fun, so I didn’t see his gun

Till I was staring straight down its smooth bore

Long Georg let a yell, and the whole room went still

I pushed back my chair, and flung myself clear

Relieved his first shot had went wide of his mark

And the thunder seemed near, as hot lead crazed my hair

Scattering sawdust off of the floor as I rolled once more

Until my own six-gun its leather finally did clear

I fired to my right, when I saw Black Ed in my sight

That Colt was dead-on; I knew old Black Ed was dead

On my left Kate held me tight, La Belle hugged me to the right

As slowly I rose to my feet, picked up that crushed piece of lead

A souvenir of mortality earned, from the good Lord up above

I thanked him for not making me dead, but no one but him cared what I said

As the drinks I paid for that night were on Black Ed…

…

Wow! I could 'feel' the action in this one. Glad to know the women folk think you're worth saving. By the way who's Kate?

God bless you. Kathy

After following the shoot out between you and George I had to come here and see where it all started:
I wasn't wrong, only poets like Geore and yourself are able to paint such imagery, Fee. I wish I would have lived back then, too. Wild men, wild women, wild horses and the occasional bullet hole. What's there not to love about?
Awesome write, my friend!!
Sending love and have a great weekend,
Becca~

Fee,
The imagery is exceptional! I'm the one peeping out from behind the bar in fear, praying my dress doesn't get ruined. Your word choices and word order really give this poem that Old West feel. A fun read! Love and Hugs~

Blimey, Darlin... you is givin me palpitations for certain sure... Not sure whether Kate is my name-sake, but the funny thing is that I, too, had an impression of being part of a Wild West Wagon train earlier this week... but I was dressed in the puritan, high busted frock-y thing (euch!) which buttons all the way up to the neck, and one of them wide-brimmed hats with the ribbon beneath the chin (double yeuch!) as I bounced about at the front of a wagon, driving the horses. Perhaps we HAVE all been part of the same bunch of pioneers somewhere along the line...??! And as for the Poker... I guess we have always won hands down when it comes to our fictions! Champagne cockails all round... I'll fix the cherries on the top! :)) Just goes to show that if you wanna be bad you gotta be good... reeeeeeeeeeal good! Kentucky Kate xx

Old West? The bars are still like that. Downtown any Friday night and you may get shot. But more likely because of the pretty girls (two at that) not the cards. lol.
Got me smiling. Thanks.

So now you are showing your colors your mongrel cheating frog, you were buried inside so many skirts that we couldn't give you the lead that you deserved.
But just wait, I am loading my faithful .44 and we will be talking.

I'm the one with the top hat, always pictured myself as the Bat Materson type of Sherrif and as you may have guessed Black Ed you are the one across the table from me, Iguess that makes Georg (Ed) the guy in the brown. lol
