Naked As A Newborn Lady Rides

The real Lady Godiva who lived around the 11th century in the years 1040 to 1080 was the wife of the Earl of Mercia. He was a friend to the church and as such paid the expenses incurred by a large religious order of the time near by the Village of Coventry. His taxes were exorbitant and were on such things as art (which ironically Lady Godiva was the only one who had any other than the church) and even a tax on manure. Lady Godiva confronted her husband and the deal was made that if she were so fevant in her beliefs that the taxes should be lowered than she should using her own naked body as an example of art make her infamous ride. She did and the rest they say is history...
PS: Good thing there were no censures or raters then or this brave story would no doubt have been lost

Like a Queens of old she sits her steed

Holding court to suitors as they come

Copper hair a flame in the Goddess sun

Hoof beats play cobblestones like a drum

 

Her stately husband so despised

Leofric would make good on his deal

Rid tax from people and to hear his peoples cries

If his Godiva’s naked beauty she’d but reveal

 

Eyes sparkle bejewelled by God above

Greeks claimed God on earth is a woman heavenly

Her curves tempt man to tempt this fate

As that day she rode through Coventry

 

Some say she rode a stallion white

Others say her hair did sweep the street

As the mitered hats of Rome condemned

Blasphemous they preached this voyeur’s treat

 

A flash of alabaster thigh, an impish wink of eye

Bare skin stroked in art by sunlight’s brush

A work of art her rapture beauty to behold

The loving crowd of fans all forward rush

 

Godiva is her name of choice

The title Lady to her once bestowed

As befits the luxury of time ago

Perhaps by some sated poet Romeo

 

Her ride rid the land of oppression’s yoke

Taxes lifted all but necessary were revoked

Her name went down in history forevermore

Lady Go diva’s pride was all in strength she wore!

What a truly A M A Z I N G Poem! ARt must be shown in anyway possible! With strong beliefs to back it up! :)
LOVE every word of this, her Soul was strong and ongoing! and you brought back a sweet memory!
I got a box of luscious gourmet chocolates
and Sweet Loving Lady Godiva was on the front of the box!
Now, I must find it!
This gem is a treasure I will savor!

Its a pity a stunt like that wouldnt put an end to oppression these days...Mind You one would have to have long hair LOL. Loved this Epic Fee, she must of been a liberationist LOL

Fee, my beloved Canadian friend, with poet like you, History will be no forgotten or hide by the prudes, but a ever lasting tribute to moral strenght from one that cared for the poor.
We have not many like her today among seven billion...that's sad.

A beautiful tribute Fee. Many only know she rode naked but they don't know what a magnanimous soul she was and the reason for her ride. I love this poem.

Well, she's certainly inspired YOU, Felix! :)) As flowing a rendition of this lady's courage of her own convictions as her beautiful flaming tresses that swept the streets clean of tyranny in her wake. The art is equally as inspiring. This is a fine marriage of morals and masterpiece. TY Kate xx

A poem of inner beauty, strength and character. I wonder if she had any fear as she faced this mountain in her life? I guess it doesn't matter as face it she did and with dignity. Thanks for the poem as it gives me inspiration.............Deborah

An epic historic tale, that you tell extremely well. And perhaps those censors were off somewhere that day counting all the money they were making on that manure tax!
