Strange things happen to even the hardest and toughest of men during war...

Battlefield Adoption

By:  Fee

A tug awakes the soldier from his short reprieve

Battlefield scarred he’d closed his eyes in fatigue

Now looking down he sees a lonely child of war

A sad, doe-eyed girl not much bigger than a twig

Little tear tracks ran down her dirty empty face

A ragged tattered dress that barely stays in place

She holds a one-armed doll that’s seen better days

In the other hand a scrap of her mother’s frilly lace

The soldier kneels to ask where her parents are

Shakes her head points up toward a midnight star

“Mommy and Daddy went to heaven yesterday,

Please, Mr. Soldier, do you have a candy bar?”

She was cut and bruised and battered in and out

He calls a medic front and centre with his shout

She munches on the Babe Ruth bar that he found

They patch and clean her while the war rages about

The soldier finds the chaplain, one he knew would care

He knew inside that little girl had so much love to share

She waited in an orphanage till the day he was released

Now she’s his little girl and with love he calms her fear…

How beautiful a write. So calming even though the battle waged around them. I could feel the soldier decide to adopt her there and then. Excellent. Liz

I wonder sometimes what goes through a warriors mind when I see those pictures of small children, like the one you described here, clinking to a uniform.
Very well penned. Missed ya!

Damn you Fee, I just got up, and already you are making me cry. This is the truth about war, and the children are in the middle of it all. This piece is a reinforcing of the human soul to do good for someone, who like you said has a lot of love to share. A child of war, who can be adopted by an allied soldier, and taken out of the dank, dusty, hunger infested streets of her homeland, and given the opportunity to blossom, is a very lucky child indeed, whether the child be a girl or a boy.

Thank you for making my heart glad today, because this piece ended on a very positive, uplifting note.

May the Lord Jesus bless you Felix, and those whom you love. May the Lord Jesus bless all the children of the world, to be happy, and free of strife and war. May the Lord Jesus bless all the decent parents who bring their children up to be responsible and loving. May the Lord Jesus put His mighty arms around all the children that are the victims of mans most inhuman of deeds ... war. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

You old dog! ! ! you still have that masterful touch that only those of pure heart can put the noble feeling in write.
Many of old veterans remember many a little boy or a little girl in Europa's WWII, in Korea and in Nam. The children paid the price, everytime.
Thanks for a keeper to come back again and again to remember that war wasn't all flag, ribbons and Purple Medals.

Georg

PS never forgot you in my prayer Fee, stay well.
