Where the Widow Walks

By: Fee

Floor boards creaked and mothballs reeked

In that old house by the sea

My a coal oil lamp, lit the cold and damp

When I turned that rusty key

Spider webs glittered, little legs twittered

From the ceiling to the floor

A generation of dust, and metal things rust

And looked like stains of blood and gore

By the lamps pale glow, my fear did grow

As I entered that eerie abode

I felt the ghosts of old, so very bold

They carried their spectral load

In a blur of red, rode the Queen of Dead

Her pet rat upon her knee

A smile of doom, glaring through the gloom

She hauntingly beckoned me

You see you are the son of the seventh son

Of he who broke my heart so long ago

Now you will pay, and on this very day

On your head his shame will show

So she told a tale, of a promise in a gale

Of my grandfather long ago

Who hadn’t returned, where her fires burned

And why she didn’t know

But on one dark night, she lost sight

And from the timbers hung

When no word came, she went insane

Now her ghost stories often sung

In front of my nose, a rope suddenly arose

And I knew there’s be no debate

So ‘twas then I spoke as my fears awoke

I told her of my Grandfather’s fate

You see he sailed the sea, the same as me

But on the night she took her life

His ship went down, and he did drown

So far from you his loving wife

She said ghost tears, from alleviated fears

Her spirit was now set free

She said goodbye, in a hollow cry

You have joined my love and me

Oh, my, the beauty of the Widow's Walk is a story of finding peace after such a long time. In my opinion, this is one of your best pieces. It takes me along and gives me a glimpse into a troubled and lonely heart who finds peace. EXCELLENT!!!!

God bless you. Kathy

Just adore tales such as this one. Reminds me of the many homes, mansions still standing up and down the eastern seaboard. Especially in the northeast corner where many a whaling village still stand with many stories of days of old and the ghost tales they do web.....

Be always safe,
Karen

Oh, my *shivers* this one is excellent, Fee, your best yet! The double rhyming just made it better - like the beat of a (terrified) heart - indeed. Well done!
