Just in an old West kind of mood I guess...

The Reverend Gunslinger
by: Fee

The Reverend rode into that sleepy town

With the good book in his hand

Sitting tall in the saddle dressed in black

Came this stranger to that land….

Pearl handled Colts tied to his hips

A Winchester sitting cross his lap

Tied his Palomino to the hitching rail

Dismounting dusted off his cap

He was there looking for a woman

And he asked for her by name

She was the one he lived and died for

And he’d pray and die for the same

She’d been kidnapped by some outlaw

Who went by the name Sundown

The Reverend heard he was hiding her

In this sleepy one horse town

The Reverend told the simple Sherriff

I think for now you’d better say goodbye

For when Sundown meets the good book

Someone’s surely going to die

The Sherriff tried to warn the outlaw

The Reverend knew that he was there

Sundown only left and kissed the lady

Who trembled now in silent fear

As they walked out in the street that day

Waistcoats back and guns in sight

All knew that one would face his maker

At the end of this gunfight

The lady watching from the window

Prayed for God to take a stand

The Good Lord must have heard her

As the guns fired in his hand

The outlaws aim was surely deadly

So too was the preacher’s aim

Both men tumbled to the ground

As the Sherriff bowed his head in shame…

Then the preacher struggled to his feet

The bible held high in the air

The bullet lodged deep inside its pages

Told of the miracle that happened there

Now the preacher wed the lady he loved

Hung up his guns to raise a family

The Hole – y good book kept on his alter

To remind him of his history

How this makes me smile, darlin Pops! What a fab story and so right on the money! Stranger things have happened, and still happen, when God rides into town to take His stand! Love the detail and atmosphere, but most of all the wry smile in all of this. Makes a lady wanna do the Can-Can to celebrate the Reverend's deadly aim and the Almighty's bulletproof vest... not cupid-proof, though, glad to say! :)) xx

I love a good Western tale. I even wrote my own Western novel. And by the title of your epic tale, I thought it might have been about good old Willie Nelson who wrote an album, and made a Western movie, called Red Headed Stranger about a fugitive preacher, on the run from the law, after killing his wife for runnin off with another man.

A fine genre piece nicely done

some of those old black powder Colts were a little short in the penetration department, and the record of many civil war regiments records like miracles -- bullets being stopped by a pocket bible (usually at extreme range)

good write
