the mermaid’s song
By: Fee
on the wet black rocks she sits at the harbor mouth
where the surf her symphony still plays
she sits and with an ivory pearl shell comb
brushes her hair and then bows and prays
for her sailor boy who once so sweet and coy
used to read his book to her from on the shore
till the ship Bluenose tall made a port of call
that schooner lured him away to sea forever more
now on the beach at night, by the lighthouse light
the moon glitters on her emerald scales
as she calls his name and sings his chanty songs
of tall ships, pirates and magic dragon tales
fresh tears she cried each night salts the tide
when the narwhal came head bowed in shame
as King Neptune’s messenger of gloom and doom
and to the mermaid whispered her true love’s name
her songs nay more heard by the harbor mouth
but they say if you stroll at night by the harbor light
you may hear the sobs of a selkie’s broken heart
as she mourns the boy once sweet and coy eternally every night...
