I look at back when we were kids and our best toy in the whole wide world from the time we could walk until we were driving our first cars was our imagination. I sadly look around now and see a whole generation who don't know how to play with theirs...

Trail Rides

Across Time

In an age scarred barn of yesteryear

next to other broken tack and tools

a dried up saddle sits abandoned

beside broken sleighs and milking stools

It was way before your time you see

in my grandfather’s day and age

long before the days of computers

when big screen TV’s weren’t the rage

That old saddle was once a magic carpet

to become the Lone Ranger or Wyatt Earp

little brother Billy liked him a lot

used to call him Marshal Burp

We’d ride with the Seventh Cavalry

or do the midnight run with Paul Revere

those sawhorse memories are special

I’ll hold them forever dear

So before they tear down that old building

I’ll carry that memory home to stay

I’ll put it in a special place of honor

where its earned its place in history…

Fee,
My parents used to toss us outside and tell us to stay out. We didn't have much more than our imaginations. It was fun. Times have changed, even since I was a kid. Too bad. Love this poem. Hugs,
Sheila

Great write cuz, of so many precious memories of yesteryear. Memories our children could never understant or enjoy with all the technoligies of today.

Love to you cuz

Fantastic write! Oil her up good, Fee(mink oil-rub it in by hand). Most kids now use their thumbs but not their imaginations. And imagined play is what creates independent thought! Chills at the thought of what kind of world they'll be creating in the future...

How true this is- and if you play these things with kids today, you find out they love them, too, but that they are not always exposed to the simpler pleasures of life. This made me think of sledding, riding the cannons and pretending they were horses at the park, cowboys and indians, etc. -that last line..... :) Michelle

my happiest hours were spent in the old barn loft. Just this year I took a walk from my aunt's house out to the old barn and realized how old and neglected it had become...but oh in the day...

Extremely sad, indeed; and I'm really glad that I got to experience those 'good old days.'

Wonderful poem, and so true. I didn't have a barn and saddle, but my bicycle was my "magic carpet" that took me on countless adventures. I think the less kids have, the more they have for sure.

Absolutely, Fee! In fact, my grandpa had a sawhorse saddled left over for the 30's horses that had lived in his barn. My cousin and I did exactly the same thing--and I'd forgotten. Thanks for the lovely trip down memory lane!

Indeed! I believe that much was lost with the advent of TV. I remember a day when there were no toys, we had to invent them. There were wide-ranging games that we invented as well. I rmember making my own stilts and spending an entire summer four feet from the ground.

I think that this is one of my favorite poems of your Fee. So true what you say about kids not knowing how to exercise their imaginations. How else can they imagine what they want to be and do when they grow up? Hugs, J'nia

If I don't recall wrong, I sat in one of those saddles when, in a previous life I ride as a Deputy with a posse trying to catch the Quantrell Gang.
Thanks for the memories (even if you are a NS Canadian, LOL)

Kids back then knew how to use their imagination; seems that kids today don't know how to have fun. Sad! Bring back those good ol' days!

Well penned, Fee; bravo!

(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in Tx., Karen Lynn. :(
