Poem Artwork

Lost Vagabond Highway

Wind chill harsh against exposed skin

like an old raw wound that didn’t heal

trudging through the morass of time

unsure of what I’m supposed to feel

my thumb out in feeble supplication

that winter rain chills me to the bone

out here on this vagabond highway

another lost soul searching for a home

and I hear your voice in my heart

feel your love somewhere up ahead

force myself to walk another mile

remembering all the things you said

hear that lonesome whistle of a semi

gears meshing shifting down to low

hop up in that shiny eighteen wheeler

thank him for an offered cup of Joe

a hundred miles of swapping heartaches

two more truck-stops talking pain

at the turn-off for the border I thank him

I step once more into the pouring rain

and the wind still carries your voice to me

my heart still feels the tug of love

with luck I’ll be in your arms tomorrow

my sweet, sweet turtle dove

the temperature dropped to minus thirty

the snow squall caught him unaware

shivering he laid down by the roadside

the next morning they found him there

in his hand was her rumpled photograph

on the back with hearts signed “I love you so!”

only five more miles to his destination

her loving arms that now would never know…

Heartbreaking, Fee - undone by the tears you must have cried, writing this, as I am undone by reading these lines - well done.

Not much action and not much thriller. But it is certainly one hell of a great stream of lyrics that if set to music would make millions. As it is we will just have to imagine them ourselves. Fine work Felix. Patrick

I have to agree with Michelle, Darlin. This is totally engrossing and you have held every ounce of emotion with such integrity, dignity and control. Very compelling and convincing writing and it's so well-articulated that it's effect is devastating and heartbreaking, as it should be. The first stanza, in particular, for me packs the biggest punch - your wording and expression here is top-notch and we are instantly thrown into the situation. Sheer brilliance, Felix. xx

well, you just ripped my heart out with this one Fee. So very sad... reminds me of the stories I heard of soldiers making it home from Nam to be killed in a car accident on the way home. Well penned my dear friend. Hugs, kathy

Fee, so many today can say I was there doing that, although not a soul offered a cup of Java, or a cigarette...or a lift. Some made home, but home was empty. Sad story brother.

What a sad ending to this soulful piece. I once wandered that vagabond highway myself, but luckily, I made it home.

This is both beautiful and sad, Fee. I am a story-poem person, so this one really spoke to me. I have been complaining because my heater went out and I had to buy a new one...problem is the size of my cabinet so it had to be ordered. It would be 2 weeks until they could install it, which will be this coming Friday. Of course, we got early snow and yes it was cold, but I have a roof over my head, a baseboard heater in my kitchen and two area heaters, not to mention plenty of warm bedding. I have empathy for the man in your story, but I would bet that he would have been more than happy to trade places with me. Soooooo no more complaining from me.
Take care,
Sherry

Brrrrrr. Poor soul. Even those of us who haven't been standing alone, shivering and hoping some driver will take pity can relate. Know I sure can. Put us there, man! "King of the Road" keps running through my head.
"Trailers for sale or rent
Rooms to let, fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets
I ain't got no CIGarettes. . ."

Hope the wo-man was worth it!

Poem certainly is!

Phyllis

There is a kind of warmth I think, brought on by soul tears such as you bring with this touching piece.
Such beauty in tragic love- caught to perfection.
