Poem Artwork

Who’s Afraid?

There’s a dirty moon in the sky tonight

In the air there’s the stench of rot

A coyote howls in the Northern pines

And the granite stones don’t say lot

Ground fog lays like a funeral shroud

Streetlights refuse to dispel the dark

Bat wings flitter like dry parchment

Old stone chapel belfry ancient stark

Tis the fowl night of evil unleashed

When spirited demons have their say

Where the devil smiles in satanic glee

While the fearful sinners kneel to pray

And there is blood on the floor boards

Neck wounds seep from those who dine

Unsated until light of morning breaks

They that drink their fill of mortal wine

Around fires in the deepest darkest woods

Hags and witches dance with such delight

They too will ply their dark magic

As once more they rule the night

Yes...ogres, monsters, imps, demons

Werewolves and cocooned mummies too

Can cross the line betwixt black and white

And there is so little we mortals dare to do

but bar your doors, lock your windows shut

Keep crucifix close, and don’t forget to pray

While keeping lights bright til night is past

and Halloween is finally yesterday…

Felix, for some reason the lyrics of "Shame on the Moon" by Rodney Crowell came to mind when I read your poem. "Go blame it on midnight, shame on the moon" - "until you've been beside a man you don't who he knows, you don't know who he don't". A different moon than you intended with your clever Halloween moon and goblins. Love and peace to you my dear friend. Jon Michael

We old forest wolfmen truly love this time of year;
And Beware the Blood Moon, as it now draws very near.
