Bay of the Wolve
By: Felix Perry
Children know, without doubt, where darkest evil lurks
They stroll with it between the headstones on bravery’s dares
Shivering they hold their ground hearing a far-off werewolve howl
False youth bravado alone to protect from insanity’s glares
The fog, like a shroud, turns vague shadows into demon form
Leaves fell to earth, like souls returning to an unmarked grave
Denuded limb-like skeletal branches grasp at clothes and hair
“Our Father who art in heaven…please, please our souls do save”
Masked faces on the streets, which ones hide the true demon’s
Stay with your friends, your mother would gravely advise
Strange things sometimes happen on all Hallowed Eve when alone
A bonfire burns at old man Billiard’s, imagined smell of Hell’s brimstone
Night of a full moon, most kids now locked safe behind closed doors
Tired, yawning they sleep but nightmares are the order of the day
In the hills a lone wolf bays at the moon over his prey before he feasts
Open grave in the cemetery a morbid reminder…
that someone with their soul must pay…

You have captured the atmosphere so well…
I could smell and detect the dampness of the fog in the air,
and the fear in the pit of my stomach..knowing that someone
with their soul must pay…
A perfect and expertly written poem for this time of year…
…but will I sleep now??

Love ya!

There are supposedly some kind of lesson given with the Halloween ritual. Unfortunately promoted by almost everyone from the church to candy manufacturers. Supposedly one is supposed to be very scared of the dark, cold and musty smelling like fall, while being entreated to gather sweets from strangers. Lately the fear has become real, with the Internet and now children only gather sweets from those they know are there parents approve of. Sad.
