I See Nothing
The insidious soot of battle clogged the skies,
all around, iridescent embers glowed
amongst the bodies and bloodied blades.
Faces unrecognised were all that showed
deathly grins set these frightening shades.
Is this what it’s like when one dies
on the field of battle?
A life ebbed away in a blood-chocked rattle.
The meek and the mighty humbled
By the clash of steel, spear and chariot wheel
Pillars of wisdom crumbled.
And now to sleep…
Dressed in swan shift
I chase the morning star
and journey with the sky serpent
to where the dawn begins.
In the land blessed with breezes
through the fields of Aaru I walk.
Reed topped souls dancing life
back into Weary bones of ivory.
Lifted with ease by hands of
destiny to the source I look,
Blinded by light
I enter the corridor
of the gods
balk
then see nothing.

I enjoyed this poem. Thanks for reading "Visions" at my den and for leaving comments as well. I am a military spouse. My husband returned from Iraq this year, so I can appreciate the sentiments that you share in this piece. You have a very interesting and pleasing style with words, and I hope that you will continue on and write more and more. You deserve to be read. I teach English also, so that's something else that I can relate to . . . poetry is everything that you say it is. For me it's mostly liberating. Take care. Great poetry.

Superbly written ! very vivid imagery. This certainly leaves a lump in the throat, and tremendous pain in the heart.
