This kinda goes with Where Did All The Innocence Go. Do you remember when doctors made house calls and came to dinner?

DOCTORS
by Barbara Lynn Terry

I remember when I was little
and I was very ill
the doctor came to the house
and gave me my pill.

I remember that we used to
have him over for dinner
on a Sunday night
and he smiled like a winner.

I remember his nice bedside manner
when he would tell me I would be okay.
He would tell me to just rest
and do my very best.

Then it seemed the great shift happened
and doctors weren't so kind any more.
Doctors now are cold, and if you don't listen
they threaten to kick you right out the door.

Whatever happened to the days
when doctors had friendly ways?
Whatever happened to the banner
of their smile and bedside manner?

Why are they all serious without a smile?
Why do they distance themselves
from the patients who need them
to help them get well?

Is it because of the money they are not making
if they make even one house call?
Is money that more important to them
than their patient's health?

Do they get more money if they see
the patient in the hopsital rather than
at home? Do they even care?
Would they make a house call on a dare?

When we call the doctor today
they set up an appointment in a way
that we either have to see them
in their clinic or at the hospital.

So, whatever happened to the day
when we would invite the doctor
over for dinner and play
card games and just laugh?

Well I tell ya, I've seen my share of them. I once saw a Physicians Asst. She just got out of school. She wanted to lecture me on the certain system that I was seeing her about. I did not want to listen to it, she got snotty then asked me why I was there. Oh no she didn't. I told her obviously you didn't bother to look into my file regarding my illness, told her off, took my file, and as I was headed out the door, she said, you can't do that (take my file). I said, Yes I can and it sure looks like I am. See ya.... Called my do about her and told him when I return to see HIM I will return my file. She is no longer there. When I have to see a new one, specialist, I remind them, I am your CUSTOMER and if it weren't for my freaking illness and others you wouldn't be getting paid. And plus, I can choose someone else.

My father worked in the medical field and the joke with the doctors were, "you don't want to cure yourself out of a job"....hmmm........

Yeah, it strikes a deep nerve with me.

Doctors have now bought into the corporate opinion that we as patients are now just all trying to defraud the system, Except the truth is they are more likely to be the ones who defraud the patients. As for me, a nurse, I tell patients look at your options carefully, get second opinions if you want too, then make a decision on your health care that will the best for you!!! The old days are gone and yet once in a while there are doctors who still practice medicine just because they love human kind look for them always!!!

you are one of the lucky ones to have this positive memory of
doctor house calls & sunday dinners... it would be very good
indeed if these days could return, but i fear not.
nicely scribed poem, barbara.
peace & blessings,
carolyn

So what is worse? Maybe of having to beg the doctors office for an appointment sometime in the same month. I have never experienced a visit from a doctor at my house but then one has never invited me over to theirs either. But the good old days are long gone. Now I pray I do not get sick or hurt. Great write, Barbara

You certainly vividly brought back to me the memories of the kindly beside manner of my childhood doctor, Barb. Here in the UK, the pressure on our creaking National Health has meant that GPs are little less than gods for all the crap they have to put up with and the pressures they are under with ever-increasing patient lists that are impossible to deal with. If EVER there was a time when your Doc had time to come round to play cards, then that must have been a form of heaven! Yes, those were the days... Nice write! xx

Those days have long ago left us for a world wrapped around the Almighty dollar, how sad it is too...

Be always safe,
Karen

I'm afraid those days and ways are long gone, Barbie. Sad but true. Thank you for sharing even though no doctor ever visited me at home and I was plenty ill when I was a child. Love and best wishes,

Regis
