We all know the types, miserable loner and high-energy social butterfly. What about the rest of us? An article in the Wall Street Journal caught my attention (Elizabeth Bernstein, "Not An Introvert? Not An Extrovert? Maybe An Ambivert.") I liked the idea, though not the lable. And a poem emerged.

              Found!

I have identity after all!

I was being misled

All these past years

About socially-engaged

Ecstatic, driven happies,

And solitary, abstract

Navel-gazing lonelies.

The first group got their

Business books and TED shows

While the second basked

In syndromes and grim novels.

I didn’t envy or want

Their angst or manic drive.

But, out there in public,

They were all there was:

Explanations made them real.

The rest of us were leftovers.

No more! We’re discovered!

We’re seventy-five percent

Of the whole caboodle,

Equally intro- and extro-.

We like solitude

And comfortable crowds,

Monk one moment and

Provisional joiner the next.

Hello. World! It’s us!

Here, there and everywhere.

Super! I'm an Ambivert too. Everywhere we turn, there are people telling us how we're supposed to be and act. So we hide our vulnerabilities and feel shame over our struggles, but we're really all in this together. Ambiverts unite :)

It's good to see you posting again. And I love the poem and the idea. I'm clearly among the 75%! Oh how I love to be alone and not distracted while I read and write and enjoy nature in my backyard. On the other hand, I love to get out to shows like I went to this past weekend to talk to people and share my ideas with them. Only one difference. I'm certainly not a joiner although I will converse with any group intelligently and not arguably.

Coming out of the closet. Has the silent majority stolen a look at itself in the mirror?

I discovered who I was years ago, it scared me so much that I moved to a south Louisiana swamp to hide from me.
