The Mystery of the Sandpiper and the Glow Worm

The sandpiper runs about the ocean waves by day and the glow worms blink on and off at night. Why? It's a mystery, and that's how some things should be.

Poem Artwork

Here he goes, running one hundred miles a second trying not to get his feet wet

There he goes again, bobbing back and forth as the tide just came and went

He can amuse us for hours on end like an entertainer and a good friend

But when the night comes, where does he go?

Perhaps it’s his time to rest while another creature glows

So here is a fly that we don’t consider a pest

Some call this one a glow worm because it’s so different from the rest

Like the sandpiper these creatures are totally amazing and entertaining

When we were little we marveled at their little lights

But now that we are older, they are still quite a sight!

How great to be entertained by a bobbing bird by day and a glowing worm at night!

So, God must have a great sense of humor!  Yes, you got that right!  LOL

Wonderful write. Both sand pipers and glow worms are rare in Colorado. In fact I had to "google" them to see if we had any at all. Apparently we do have a some. Your poem brings back vivid memories of Sandpipers doing their dance with the waves on the beach. I don't think I've ever seen a glow worm but we do have an occasional firefly in the summer.
Thanks for the warm fuzzy feeling I got from reading this.

I agree. I realized a long time ago that God has a unique sense of humor. He manages to grant our insignificant wishes in the strangest ways while leaving the bigger issues for us. Who hasn't thought to themselves, "I wish they had this in my size." Then you're walking to the register, and the blouse is hanging in the linen section waiting for you. A sense of humor.

Creation (nature) is truly filled with wonders. Would that mankind learned to respect all of them even to the tiniest. Well done, John. Love, peace, and blessings,

It is interesting that you would mix these two marvels in a single poem.

You seem to be describing what is commonly called a firefly. Although I've never seen one, the glowworm is supposedly the caterpillar stage of development of the firefly. In any case, these creatures are sure intriguing.
