A few days ago I was reminiscing with a friend about the time when we were young and life hadn't yet teach cynicism

Poem Artwork

This one is dedicted to my fellow author, friend and brother Jasmin Horst Seiler, Gross Gott!

Winter, ice getting everywhere, making
hard as iron the leather of your boots,
nineteen years old soldier and yet
six months of combat made him much old,
freezing breeze getting everywhere,
uninvited squatter inside your fox-hole,
and then, nearly Christmas one night,
we heard a woman rasping voice,
telling us about Lily Marlene…
“vor der kaserne vor den grossen tor”
coming from the enemy positions
making all of us to long after home,
and I am sure that the other soldiers,
those Germans nineteen years old
were thinking of many girl friends
perhaps living by their house’s next door,
but we that couldn’t understand German
Oh man! Yes!…we really understood.

Winter, holding paper and pencils, maybe
saying goodbye in case not going home
from an unmerciful and white landscape
turning red by so many soldiers blood;
to get to a few evils they offer so many
in the year of the Lord nineteen forty four;
buddies hugged together getting covered
by like traveling sand dunes made of snow,
breathing monuments of indestructible humans
to get the combatant buddies a little more warm,
because it can’t be on going much more longer
they heard of saying about that damned war,
perhaps the other side were hearing the same
as they was sharing the same piece of world,
plowed by cannons to sowed more death seeds
on nights encrusted with diamonds by the millions
as the soldiers heard that woman singing to them
“Vor der kaserne vor dem grossen tor…”

I WAS BORN IN 1944...EVERYTHING WAS RATIONED AT THAT TIME...BUT THIS WAS THE 'LIGHT' SIDE OF THE WORLD BEING AT WAR FOR THE 2ND TIME... HORRORS THAT TURNED YOUNG MEN INTO OLD MEN AND CORPSE CAN ONLY BE IMAGINED AND...THAT SULTRY, COARSE, SEXY VOICE WITH ITS TAUNTING MESSAGE, THAT ...CAN NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. BRILLANT WRITE - I LOOKED UP THE TRNSLATION AND WENT TO UTUBE AND LISTENED TO MARLENE. THANKS FOR SHARING AND BLESSINGS. JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Wonderful, terrible commentary on the human condition and the horrors of war. Sends shivers down my spine to think of it. Excellent tribute to those that try not remember, though Gott verbotten, wie vergesse ihr grossen Opfern!

This will bring Poet Jasmin Horst Seiler's memory to its boiling point... ODER NICHT?... OR NOT?

Tenth line of first stanza, which is the closing line of the second:
“Vor der kaserne vor dem grossen tor…” READS IN ENGLISH:
“Before the barracks before the big gate…”

I read "1944 and all soldiers bride"... Intriguing memory and historical striking composition.

I salute You, Poet.

So many men, each with their memories and yet most keep those memories hidden from view. How many lives were changed forever, and others with near a chance. My father and his brothers swore an oath between each other never to talk about the horrors they experienced and took it all to their graves. Thanks for sharing this memory and a wonderful dedication to another very brave soul....

Be always safe,
Karen

So many memories you must hold, Georg. You've presented this one with graciousness and honor; beautifully written, dear friend. Give us more of your poetic rememberances...please.
Also enjoyed the song. Isn't that Marlene Dietrich singing the song Lili Marene? Beautiful song...beautiful woman. "My Lili of the lamplight, My own Lili Marlene."

My father-in-law was shot down twice over Germany in WWII. He never would talk about it. What horrors must have been hidden in the confines of his mind...

Yes, I was born on that date. My cousin Paul who is dead now used to talk about those German days. He got to Germany just as the war was ending. He had to stay to clean up. He never did marry. But he was always going back to his war days right before he died and telling us about it. Interesting it was just like yours is interesting too.

My friend this hit home with a barrage of unlived memories. My first published work was a book I wrote in the first person called Red Soil. It was a bio of my Dad who was with the West Nova Scotia Regiment in WWII who fought up through Europe from Italy to eventually liberate Holland. In researching and writing as if I was him I felt like I had lived a little of what he had suffered in those far away trenches and battlefields.
