The waves grew large, the boat heaved
Slamming into the troughs, bang, bang!
Each wave seemed larger
More powerful, more demanding
The boaters hoping to reach the shore before
The waves struck them down.

The clouds rolled, blowing in from the south
Throwing cold rain before it
Shivering, fighting the tiny boat took its precious cargo
Wet and frightened ,edging them
closer to the safety of harbors
Struggling in the four foot swells

Then the shore was close
Banging into the rocks at the edge of the lake
Both boaters breathed a sigh
Tying the battered 14 footer
To an overhanging tree, both rested
Wondering just how close
Davy’s locker had been.
