Reading John Flanagan's poem 'beautiful decay' reminded me of this older piece I had recetnly spiffed up. My tongue-in-cheek look at life... Hope you enjoy!
Zephyr
The sign read 'Ride for FREE!'
Didn't occur to me then
That I couldn't read yet...
It was just something I KNEW
And it's not like it would have
Made any amount of difference
Because Life gives us few options at times.
So I hopped aboard, eager to ride
The zephyr of life, a slippery slide...
I tumbled quick into childhood's glee
Of dreams and schemes and other things,
Slid into trouble a time or two...
Or perhaps three, but who's counting?
Almost flew past adolescence
Which would not have been a bad idea
When I think about it now...
All those changes? All those hormones?
All those... zits??
Now that I've slid into adulthood.. almost colliding
With someone sliding the other way...
(Hmmm... now that CANNOT be a good sign!)
I think I am beginning to understand
Just why this ride was FREE
And sometimes wish I'd taken the scenic route
Through adolescence and beyond.
Hairpin curves and tailspins have made me reach
For a seat belt that I realize isn't there...
(Houston! We have a problem!... Hello? Houston????...
Well... crap!!)
Anyway...
I have found myself at the top of the world
More than once, thinking I had made it,
Only to crash like a boulder in the next breath.
And speaking of breath...
It has been knocked out of me
More times that I can count-
I've never found that elusive emergency brake either
Or the pull rope that screams 'Let me OFF!'
I am thinking I can file a claim for false advertising....
"Class action' ... here I come!
BUT.. all that being said...
Did I hop off... say enough is enough?
Umm... not when faced with the alternative!
Instead I kept my seat and went for the ride of my life
Because that is what IT is... MY LIFE!
This zephyr, a slippery slide,
One I would not trade for the world!
I wonder though...
If I'd asked for seat belts,
Would I have been charged admission?
Okay.. so maybe not in THIS lifetime...
Hey... how about the next??
Sigh... (shaking head) I digress...
Perhaps it would still be the same but no matter...
I'd still hop aboard and ride like the wind
On this zephyr, this slippery slide
Because in the end...
Life is what I make of IT...
Not what I let IT make of me.
("Houston' is not available...
Would you like to leave a message?)
This totally out of character poem by you has me laughing so hard my stomach hurts Myrna. You never, ever, cease to amaze me. I'll see if I can get Houston to call you. In the meantime keep on riding.
Hugs,
Marcia
Wow, after that crazy ride, you gotta stop and catch your breath, but wait, it's not over, so buckly up, it's going to be a bumpy ride. Great write SPP
