Epigraph on a Stone...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

PORTRAYAL 8. Though the betrayal was devastating, it also heightened her gift, and for a short season, a wounded woman's poetic pen burned with honesty. After that, the house-of-cards collapsed, and she became a ghost. In memory.

Poem Artwork
Perhaps it began a bit
off-kilter, for me especially,
seeing what I saw, standing
in the middle of the bridge,
(seeing both the
beginning
and the end)
and knowing,
somehow, that I had
an avenue of escape no
matter what might happen
.
Knowing I had the
advantage: it made more
sense to be me, not some
suave fictitious character- to be
truthful, understanding, and to
shun spinning a personality
that may seem appealing
in a grander scheme
of subterfuge, and
shrewd manipulation…
.
But all the woeful
shortfalls of faceless
friendship, coupled with an
innocent but benign effrontery,
painted a somber palette, and your
fawning disposition soon became
like rice paper beneath the
thundering feet of
stampeding elephants…. Then….
.
the house-of-cards fell,
and all the edges of theory
lessened, when you
opted to remain
defiantly concealed in
the shadows, amidst thorns
of saint-like sorrow, in a place
of colorless enigma, that soon began
to resemble an epigraph on a stone…

The Portrayal Series are Poetiprose insights concerning family and virtual acquaintances. They will address also some of the actors, artists, and musicians, I personally worked with in college, or professionally, in my 20’s - 40’s. All of these individuals were influential (in one way or another) in shaping the man I’ve become.                     Between the Cracks - A Monumental Journey Series

INDEED, WE ARE SHAPED AND MOLDED EACH AND EVERY DAY OF OUR LIVES...AND THE 'ENGRAVINGS', HOWEVER SLIGHT OR GREAT, WILL NEVER CEASE UNTIL WE LEAVE THIS PLACE. THUS, ONE IS ENABLED TO EMBRACE SO MUCH THROUGH THE BLESSED GIFT OF TIME, THAT IS AGING AND, OF COURSE, PAIN. FOR, ENCOMPASSING THE PATHS OF RETROSPECT AND FORESIGHT, NOW ONE 'SEES' AND CAN APPRECIATE THE 'CHISELING' ...AND IS GRATEFUL. THANK YOU, RICHARD. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Your memory of this shaper of the man that you are is still vivid when you write about her and her betrayal. But I'm not sure If she was literally or figuratively on the bridge. It makes all the difference.

You've penned a rather complex reflection of self-worth and courage to go forward in you own sense of history and what might be an unfinished epigraph on your own stone. I might be wrong with the interpretation, but it did arrest a commonality in me and many I've observed over the years. I particularly likened to the bridge metaphor. Kudos.
