Savage Deserts...

by Richard Lloyd Cederberg — Read all 280 poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Many dreams of late. What was most distressing about one in particular was being shown that a last door of originality would be opening (for a short time) in which Truth would be proffered by a few, and repudiated by most. ‘We the People’ are in a seemingly unstoppable season of political madness, discrimination, deception, hypocrisy, and arbitrary lockdown, and all of it is being fueled perfectly by the irrevocable commitment each person has embraced as personal truth. There’s no turning back now. As a nation, we are radically divided in spirit and purpose, and about to enter into a desert experience the likes of which we have never known before. Who’s in your heart?

Poem Artwork
In the vision, and
visible through the arch,
a savage desert loomed with
no comfort or streams,
just thorny cactus,
(thousands of them) and
each jealously hoarding its moisture
and caring naught for others
.
Struggling to cast-off
a burnt-cork façade,
inquisitiveness
passed
through
the archway
into a wasteland
from a good position
of mind and spirit, to see
more of what it felt drawn to
.
But in this place…
.
Water, he saw,
was not enough
to survive
where thick skin
and succulent flesh
took always what it wanted
while keeping a bristly balance
.
Then it came to his sight,
a time-ravaged dwelling where
nothing was plumb, level, or square,
a ramshackle structure shaky from
time and wear, where no piece
fit another
without a gap…
And he saw there that
nothing was clearly defined,
and that black and white
were all gradations
of grays, a forest
of giant stones,
of fossilized stumps,
where a weight of sameness
never cheered in harmony together
.
Surviving it seemed,
required the ability to
see beneath the surface,
to understand the unseen,
a deeper sense of inwardness,
of belonging, of being accurate,
where the spirit did not loathe
the unending struggle
to be truthful, or
the leaning
to stand apart,
(despite sunlight’s burn
or moonlights chill) as hope
waited for blooms to burst open
and refresh weariness with redolence,
.
But in this place…
.
Water, he saw,
was not enough
to survive
where thick skin
and succulent flesh
took always what it wanted
while keeping a difficult balance
.
So, he resolved to
press forward faithfully,
to accept the challenge, to
stakeout no beginnings or ends,
to establish no fortifications,
other than his faith, from
which boundaries
would not be raised,
shutting out the light, or
separating inside from outside,
with all possibilities open,
and no path closed
to the sacred
freedoms of writing,
where truthfully sharing
allowed every impulse of vision
to explode from the core honestly,
so that when the creative
flow had finally ended,
that what was left behind
(MORE) resembled a
field of wildflowers, than the
Savage Deserts they were discovered in...

AS A NATION....AS A PEOPLE....THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE. FOR, THAT IS THE REASON 'HE' HAS NOT COME BACK, YET. GIVING THE INHABITANTS OF THIS PLANET MORE TIME TO...COME TO JESUS! AND, THOUGH OFTEN WE ARE NOT AWARE, MANY DO STILL, INDEED TURN TO HIM, BUT FOR MANY...THEY REMAIN LOST. LOST BECAUSE THEY REFUSE TO BOW THE KNEE AND CONFESS THAT HE IS LORD. THE LINES FROM THIS HYMN SO POWERFUL;'...TURN YOUR EYES UPON JESUS, LOOK FULL ON HIS WONDERFUL FACE, AND THE CARES OF THE WORLD WILL GROW STRANGELY DIM, IN THE LIGHT OF HIS GLORY AND GRACE...' BUT FOR THE MULTITUDE DOING THIS IS TOO SIMPLE TO BE...REAL. THUS, FOR THOSE OF US WHO HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH HIM AND HAVE BECOME HIS 'WILLING' PRISONERS... WE ARE 'SUSTAINED' AS WE WALK THROUGH THESE SAVAGE DESERTS...AND WE HAVE A JOB TO DO. FOLLOWING HIS LEAD AND INSPIRATIONS WE THROW PERFUMED FLOWERS AND BECKON...THAT'S ALL WE CAN DO, AMEN. THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING, RICHARD. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS INSPIRATIONS

Dreams do seem to be on the rise these days and your surreal dream of the desert may or may not be the landscape of our future. Particularly the way you describe it.

I see the desert's landscape as an adaptation to what is available. Water is scarce. It must be used efficiently and not wasted. Even the rocks have a purpose. They can be used to build strong structures that retrain day heat for the long cold night. The cactus have a way of storing water that is beneficial to many animals, reptiles, birds and insects. A real source of not hoarding water, but saving and sharing it. The flowers are a spectacular contrast of what can result from new relationships.

Our future opens up endless possibilities to make the world better and more understanding each other. All we have to do is have the vision as we look at the desert ahead.

I really appreciated this write, Richard. It is a plethora of metaphoric perfections in the cohesion of man, nature, and the inner-self ability to survive, as well as maintain self-respect. Your graduation from the bleakness to the wildflowers was unexpected, yet the perfect exercise in the unity of opposites as a principal of reality. You should pen more of this kind of wordsmithed wisdom, my friend. Kudos!!

The dream where you stepped into a desert, but when you left it became a field of wild flowers, which only means that you are a good seeder with green thumbs. Everywhere you've walked and everything you touched will have the potential to grow wildly. Nice dream!

I like the idea of a field of wild flowers. Yu seem to have seeded them so symmetrically apart/together, that one can see the struggle you had to go through in the dessert in order to build your garden on earth.
Keep penning dear poet friend, its the crystal sword of survival for many. Thank you for being here, strong and in Faith, for that is what a reader needs when reading poetry. Prayers for a better U. S. ,
